According to the legend, the places were named as follows: the temple chosen by Maharshi Kapila for the yagam, Kapilan Kovil, later became Kankol; the place where rice was cooked and offered, Oottithadam, became Ootithadam; the northern enclosure of the yagasala, Vadashery, became Vadashery; the area with a pond where food was served, which had a jungle, became Undakkovval Kundayamkovval; the place where a banyan tree was erected to keep the cattle became Alakkada; the place where ash and charcoal were dumped after the yagam became Karinkuzhi; the place where a basket was kept for plucking flowers became Kottarakkachaal; the place where great personalities resided became Mahadilmathil; the place where a mark was made became Kurubelee; the land where a banyan tree was planted became Alappadamba; and the place where water was drunk to quench thirst became Ettukudukka. Kankol Alappadamba is a scenic region with hills and valleys. As the name suggests, this panchayat was formed by combining the two villages of Kankol and Alappadamba.
